Project Manager in Food and Drug Control

Country of assignment and location

Riyadh, Capital of Saudi Arabia, the booming and lively Center of the Kingdom with 4 million citizens provides an excellent infrastructure and very good living conditions.

The Project

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has the mandate and the mission to play the leading role in consumer protection in Saudi Arabia. It is expected to improve life quality and health of the Saudi population and to reduce risks and damages caused by food, drug, medical devices or their preliminary products.

In SFDA the official activities regarding the safety of foods, drugs, and medical devices are combined. The main task is to control all establishments handling these products and to control the products themselves. Additionally SFDA has the mandate to draft and launch standards, decrees, and regulations in its area of responsibility. Herewith SFDA has the necessary prerequisites to perform its expected role effectively.

The overall objective is to ensure food and drug safety at the highest level, internationally comparable with most developed countries. In complying with this, SFDA strives to act as a key player in the region (esp. the Gulf Cooperation Council) for the safety of foods, drugs, and medical devices.

To reach this ambitious goal, SFDA expressed its interest to co-operate with German authorities and institutions and to benefit from German experiences. During a first fact finding mission of German experts in March 2007 organized by GTZ, one result showed that the food sector within SFDA should be expanded, improved and developed with high priority, especially border inspection points (BIP) and the accreditation of its laboratories.

Your Tasks

The Project Manager will be responsible for the following tasks.:

  • Drafting of an overall plan of the structure of the food safety sector in Saudi Arabia including all bodies concerned.
  • Drafting and realising a plan of the organisational structure of the Food Sector of SFDA. This plan comprises of an organisational chart, the allocation of the personnel, the financial structure, and the distribution of tasks between the departments.
  • Drafting an overall organization of the food import control system.

Your Qualifications

The PM will act as the Project Manager together with German Long- and Shortterm-Experts and the Saudi Counterpart. He will coordinate and manage all project activities and he will be responsible for the project success.

He should have the following qualifications and skills:

  • University degree in veterinary medicine, food science or a related subject
  • Thorough knowledge of the European standards and requirements for food control
  • At least 8 years of working experience on official food and feed controls
  • Expert knowledge in food control and consumer protection legislation
  • Very good English language skills
  • Experiences in international project management
  • Team leading abilities
  • Good skills in conducting training, communication and presentation

Duration

The assignment is expected to commence in August 2009. Duration will be 24 month at least.
